Why sizes don't translate neatly
Shoe sizes are counted in three different units: barleycorns (a third of an inch) in the US and UK, Paris points (two thirds of a centimetre) in Europe, and plain millimetres in Japan and the ISO Mondopoint system. Their steps never line up, so every conversion involves rounding, and each brand rounds its own way. That's why one shoe maker calls a US men's 9 an EU 42.5 and another an EU 42 ⅔.
Clothing is messier still. Europe alone has three women's scales (German, French and Italian sit two numbers apart), and labels drift over time as brands size generously. The most reliable number you own is a measurement in centimetres. Every tool on SizeGuide lets you start from one.
Questions shoppers ask
How do I convert US shoe sizes to EU?
For men, EU is roughly US + 33 at the middle of the range (US 9 = EU 42.5 on Nike's chart); for women, roughly US + 31 (US 8 = EU 39). The steps are uneven, so use the converter rather than a formula.
Are UK and US clothing sizes the same?
No. Women's UK dress sizes are four numbers higher than US (US 8 = UK 12). Men's chest-based sizes for suits and shirts are the same in both countries.
Where do these charts come from?
Each tool is built from a named published chart: Nike and adidas for shoes, Wacoal for bras, Carter's and OshKosh for kids, EN 420 for gloves, ISO 8653 for rings, New Era for hats, and others listed on the sources page.
Why does my size change between brands?
There is no single worldwide sizing standard in shops. Brands pick their own fit models and "vanity size" their labels, so treat any conversion as a starting point and check the brand's chart.
